Home row keys are nice, but they often aren't that much of a win because you have to switch modes. My personal opinion is that Emacs ultimately wins unless you have a typing disability (and even then you can configure Emacs to require only key sequences and not combinations like Ctrl+letter). Proponents of Emacs retort that Emacs has a lot of commands that are not frequently used, so don't warrant a key binding, but are damn convenient when you need them ( obligatory xkcd reference). Proponents of vi(m) argue that you can do pretty much everything without leaving the home row, and that makes you more efficient when you need it most. Productivity: This is an extremely hard topic. If I was to redesign vi(m), I'd definitely keep the modes.Īsymptotic learning curve: Both Vim and Emacs have a lot of features, and you will keep discovering new ones after years of use. It takes a little habit, but after a while it feels very natural. Since I've dispelled a couple of Emacs myths, let me dispel a vi myth: a modal editor is not hard or painful to use. Seriously, I agree that Vim's learning curve starts steep, steeper than any other editor, although this can be lessened by using gvim. Initial learning curve: This varies from person to person. Admittedly this was on a weird platform (Cygwin). Turning the tables, I have observed Vim taking noticeably longer to load than Emacs ( vim -u /dev/null vs. (Since XEmacs 21 or GNU Emacs 23, you can open an Emacs window from a running X instance inside a terminal.) You can also edit remote files from within Emacs, but it does break the flow if you're in an ssh session in a terminal. In some situations you can keep an Emacs running inside Screen. Starting a remote Emacs is (usually) slower than starting a remote Vim. There's one exception, which is when you log in to a remote machine and want to edit a file there. ![]() So Emacs's slow startup is mostly a myth. Yes, Emacs is slow to start up, but this is not a big deal: you start Emacs once per session, then connect to the running process with emacsclient. Startup time: Vi(m) proponents complain about Emacs's startup time. ![]() Emacs features keep out of the way when you don't use them and the documentation is very well organized. If you don't use it, you don't have to know it's there. ![]() In the 21st century, Emacs bloat is just a myth.įeature bloat isn't a problem either. Right now, on my machine, Google Chrome needs about as much RAM per tab as Emacs does for 100 open files, and I won't even mention Firefox. For an ordinary user, this argument is irrelevant: Emacs is easily available for every desktop/server OS, and since it supports remote editing, it's enough to have it on your desktop machine anyway.īloated? Emacs once stood humorously for “Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping”. Still, I'll try to make an objective comparison on a few issues.Īvailable everywhere? If you're a professional system administrator who works with Unix systems, or a power user on embedded devices (routers, smartphones with Busybox, …), you need to know vi (not Vim), because it's available on all Unix systems and most Unix-like systems, whether desktop, server or embedded. I use both, although if I had to choose one, I know which one I would pick. ![]() The idea to paint “something the mind already knows,” in the artist’s words, came to him in a dream. Mildly annoying, the sound fades as we approach his iconic Flag (1954-55), among the artist’s greatest works. In Philadelphia, “Mind/Mirror” begins with the disembodied voice of John Cage reading Johns’ cryptic texts. At Johns’ debut in 1958, a prescient reviewer noted that his “genuinely new art assaults and enlivens the mind and the eye with the exhilaration of discovery.” Perhaps the most influential American artist of the 20th century, the 91-year-old Johns came to aesthetic maturity within the network of conceptual and experimental artists in downtown Manhattan that included John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Robert Rauschenberg, who was his lover for a time.Ĭage’s interest in chance in the creative process is early manifest in Johns’ intriguing False Start (1959), with its randomly placed bursts of color.Īlthough the artist’s gestural brushwork and painterly drips were symbolic links to his abstract expressionist elders, the banal, enigmatic images he exhibited at the start of his career, pointed toward the emotionally cooler future of Pop, Minimal, and Conceptual art. In describing the shows’ contents in a public conversation with Rothkopf (available on the Whitney’s website), Basualdo said with a smile: “Everything is unique, and everything is part of a series.” ![]() While Philadelphia focuses on images of numbers in its “First Motifs” section, for example, the Whitney highlights flags and maps. ![]() The same ten thematic categories, variously interpreted, structure both halves. The whole thing gets showered in an oat streusel, which turned out to be my favorite part of the cake and the bane of my existence during the development process: Iteration after iteration, my streusel kept melting and/or sinking into the cake. Made in an 8-by-8-inch pan, the lemon-kissed sour cream cake is topped with ripe summer berries (I use a combination of raspberries and blackberries) that bake up just jammy enough while retaining some of their structure. This month’s cake is directly inspired by my favorite Jeni’s flavor and doubles as my ode to long, slow (and quiet) Ohio summers. Though I’m constantly vacillating between the two (I’m currently in a Graeter’s phase), I remember falling in love with Jeni’s iconic Brambleberry Crisp flavor the first time I had it years ago: Each pie-like scoop is swirled with the perfect ratio of brambleberry jam and chunks of brown sugar oat streusel. While my friends tended to gravitate toward Jeni’s ’gram-ready vibes and unexpected flavors (goat cheese with red cherries, anyone?), my dad has always been an outspoken Graeter’s devotee, preferring their old-school, no-frills setup and simple, classic options (their cookies and cream can’t be beat, in my opinion). I will be looking forward to reviewing more Jeni's flavors in the future.Having grown up in Columbus, Ohio, Graeter’s and Jeni’s were always my go-to spots for grabbing a cold, creamy treat on summer nights. Once you get past the sticker shock, though, it is very good ice cream. In the past, I'd occasionally get double-takes from cashiers while they rang up eight dollar pints of McConnell's - Jeni's is even more than that. This pint was ten dollars at Whole Foods. A word of warning, though: Jeni's is not cheap. One of the best pints I've had in terms of quality and combinations of flavors. The fact that the jam was isolated to a swirl on the side was worried me at first after the mixing issues that I encountered in a similar Steve's flavor, but it was very easy to get a little bit of jam into every spoonful.Ī very successful pint. ![]() The jam was tasty, not too tart and not too sweet. I briefly wondered if the ice cream would even melt if I left it out on the counter but I ate it fast enough anyways. I didn't taste the tapioca but it did its job of keeping the ice cream both thick and soft at the same time. The vanilla & streusel base was delicious. The swirl of jam is thick and off to one side of the pint. If you look really close you can see vanilla bean specks as well. The vanilla base is visible with golden colored oat specks visible. On to the ice cream! Opening the pint took a bit of effort because the jam had formed a bond with the lid. The crisp means that oat streusel has been mixed in to give the sensation that you are having a slice of berry pie with vanilla ice cream. Here, Jeni's specifically uses a jam make with blackberries and blackcurrants. "Bramble" is a vague term usually associated with blackberries, raspberries or other cane berries. The first Jeni's flavor I am trying is Brambleberry Crisp. I like tapioca, so that sounds intriguing. Many brands use either egg yolks or guar gum to give their ice cream the right consistency - thick without being icy. What appears to set her apart from other ice cream makers is her choice of thickening agent. ![]() Just the type of thing that makes for interesting reviews. She focuses on creative flavor combinations using high quality ingredients. Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream was founded in Columbus, Ohio by Jeni Britton Bauer in 2002. Whole Foods is now in my rotation of places to check for ice cream. A whole row of Jeni's ice cream flavors as well as some Coolhaus flavors I hadn't seen before and a couple of Three Twins flavors as well. Anyways, off I went to the Whole Foods this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw in the freezer case. First, they don't sell Diet Coke there and second, I associate Whole Foods with things such as hummus and organic rutabaga - not tasty desserts. I don't usually find myself at Whole Foods. It turns out the only place near me that carries Jeni's is Whole Foods. After another request last week, I checked online for where in San Diego to get it. ![]() I have been getting requests for reviews of pints of Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream for quite a while but I haven't been able to find any pints at the grocery stores that I frequent. Note values tell a musician how long to hold out a note in a piece of music. Let’s take a look at each of these symbols and start applying them to our music. We call this oval-shaped part of a note ‘ the note head ’. It’s like a small oval-shaped zero or letter O, which is a good way to think of it when you first begin writing music. All of these symbols are the roadmap in which musicians must recognize in order to read a piece of music. The first note is called a semibreve, or in the US, it’s called a ‘ whole note. The types of music symbols that a musician may come across in a piece of music are notes, note values, rests, dotted notes, dotted rests, repeat signs, sharps, flats, naturals, and all types of chords. Being able to quickly recognize a note, rest, or any other music symbol helps the musician to successfully navigate a piece of music and understand exactly what’s happing in a piece of music. Musical symbols are marks and symbols in musical notation that indicate various aspects of how a piece of music is to be performed. Having the ability to read and recognize music note symbols is an important part of a musician’s musical education. ![]() ![]() This warning page constitutes a legally binding agreement between me, this website and/or any business in which I have any legal or equitable interest.I agree that by entering this website, I am subjecting myself, and any business entity in which I have any legal or equitable interest, to the personal jurisdiction of the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County, should any dispute arise at any time between this website, myself and/or such business entity.I understand that my use of this website is governed by the website's Terms which I have reviewed and accepted, and I agree to be bound by such Terms.I further agree that neither this website nor its affiliates will be held responsible for any legal ramifications arising from any fraudulent entry into or use of this website I am solely responsible for any false disclosures or legal ramifications of viewing, reading or downloading any material appearing on this site. The viewing, reading and downloading of sexually explicit materials does not violate the standards of any community, town, city, state or country where I will be viewing, reading and/or downloading the Sexually Explicit Materials.I believe that sexual acts between consenting adults are neither offensive nor obscene.I believe that as an adult it is my inalienable constitutional right to receive/view sexually explicit material.I desire to receive/view sexually explicit material. The sexually explicit material I am viewing is for my own personal use and I will not expose any minors to the material.I have attained the Age of Majority in my jurisdiction.§ 1746 and other applicable statutes and laws that all of the following statements are true and correct: Do NOT continue if: (i) you are not at least 18 years of age or the age of majority in each and every jurisdiction in which you will or may view the Sexually Explicit Material, whichever is higher (the "Age of Majority"), (ii) such material offends you, or (iii) viewing the Sexually Explicit Material is not legal in each and every community where you choose to view it.īy choosing to enter this website you are affirming under oath and penalties of perjury pursuant to Title 28 U.S.C.
